Semiclassical Coupled Wave Theory for 1d Photonic Crystals with Dissipation

چکیده
We show that a modified form of the semiclassical coupled wave theory gives a reliable description of wave propagation in a 1D photonic crystal with complex refractive index. The key idea of the theory remains the same: to include both variable amplitudes and variable (geometric-optics) phases in the counterpropagating coupled waves within the photonic crystal. Here, however, the phases become complex. As a result, the coupling amplitudes between the counterpropagating waves gain new properties.

Semiclassical Coupled Wave Theory for Bandgap Calculations in Periodically Stratified Dielectric Media
Photonic crystals are artificial low-loss either two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) dielectric structures with a periodic modulation of the refractive index. Due to Bragg reflection, electromagnetic (optical) waves cannot propagate through such structures in certain directions, at certain frequencies. Hence, photonic crystals can exhibit bandgaps (even omnidirectional bandgaps in ce...

Photonic crystals are artificial low-loss dielectric structures with periodic modulation of refractive index, which have attracted considerable attention in the last two decades. Due to Bragg reflection, electromagnetic (optical) waves cannot propagate through such structures in certain directions, at certain frequencies. Hence, photonic crystals can control the propagation of electromagnetic w...
متن کاملSemiclassical Coupled Wave Theory for TM-waves in 1-D Photonic Crystals
A one dimensional periodic structure with high refractive index contrast can serve as a photonic crystal [1–5]. Among the common theoretical methods for wave motion in such structures, the coupled wave approach offers superior physical insight and gives simple analytical results in limiting cases. Unfortunately, the conventional coupled wave theory of Kogelnik [6–8] fails in the case of high re...
متن کاملSemiclassical coupled-wave theory and its application to TE waves in one-dimensional photonic crystals.
A semiclassical coupled-wave theory is developed for TE waves in one-dimensional periodic structures. The theory is used to calculate the bandwidths and reflection/transmission characteristics of such structures, as functions of the incident wave frequency. The results are in good agreement with exact numerical simulations for an arbitrary angle of incidence and for any achievable refractive in...

The performance of a polarizing beam splitter based on the one-dimensional photonic crystals (1D-PCs), is theoretically investigated. The polarizing beam splitter consists of a symmetric stack of the low-index quarter-wave plates and the high-index half-wave plates with a central defect layer of air. The linear transmission properties of the polarizing beam splitter are numerically simulat...
